In 2015, the team at YouCubed started a tradition called Week of Inspirational Maths (WIM) by releasing free lessons and videos designed for the first week of school, to get students excited about mathematics. New WIM resources have been added every year since then.
The YouCubed site has many premade ” playlists” for a Weeks of Inspirational MAths (WIM) howver if they do not fit you programme you can build your own
The 2022 version of WIM focuses on teaching to big ideas— with new tasks to add to the kete of existing WIM tasks.
The lesson plans and materials are provided in Google Slides which for you to use or make your own copy of for these tasks
- Grades K-1 [ Age 5-6]: Which is More? (Number Sense Exploration). In this task learners compare two groups of dots drawn from a deck of cards, helping them develop strategies for determining which group has more dots both visually and by using counting strategies.
- Grades 2-3 [Age 7-9]: I Spy 1/2 (Seeing Fractions, Parts and Wholes). This activity is designed to help students build a deep and flexible understanding of ½ and one whole by trying to spy ½ in a complex geometric image
- Grades 4-5 [Age 9-11]: Table Patterns (Exploring the Coordinate Plane).
- Grades 6-9 [Age 1-14] : Patterns on the Coordinate Plane (Slopes and Intercepts). In this task students explore their own visual patterns, make a table and draw the pattern as a graph
- Grades 10-12 [Age 15+] : Which is Better? (Equations to Model and Predict). This task is designed to have ākonga work in groups to make sense of the given problem and determine a plan to test if their initial thinking was correct. ( percentage discount/GST)
