CODAP: starting from zero

CODAP is the Common Online Data Analysis Platform. It runs in your browser, requires no installation and no signup, and is free. More and more projects and teachers are using CODAP in school STEM courses and in data science, and it is becoming a common ingredient in stats education research. This 90-minute workshop/webinar will start you at the very beginning and take you surprisingly far. You can “work along” with the presenter to get hands-on experience with the basics and see several examples of beyond-the-basics activities you can do with CODAP. We’ll also take some time to talk about the logistics of using CODAP with students, including how to get data into CODAP and how to set up CODAP documents for student use.

We can decide what beyond-the-basics topics to discuss based on participant interest. They can include topics as diverse as: using hierarchical organization to put data into groups; making aggregate measures; using CODAP plugins to extend its capabilities; doing diagnosis with classification trees; elementary text and sentiment analysis; using maps; and randomization procedures for inference.

When you register you can indicate further topics of interest to inform what is covered in the second part of the workshop.

Tim Erickson has been developing data analysis and modeling technology and curriculum for schools for decades. He is one of the designers of CODAP and Fathom, and currently works to create web-based tools for data analysis and visualization, especially in the form of CODAP plugins. He frequently presents to teachers across the US and internationally. Before all this technology, he created materials for cooperative learning, including the books Get It Together and United We Solve. He also plays the cello (poorly), tries to walk 10000 steps a day, and makes really delicious pancakes and granola.

All are welcome IASE and non-IASE members to the session.
