Aromatawai and the Principles of Assessment

“High quality assessment supports qualifications which are credible, reliable and valuable for students, employers and communities, whether here in Aotearoa New Zealand or overseas,”  NZQA Deputy Chief Executive Assessment, Andrea Gray.

Aromatawai and the Principles of Assessment  aims to strengthen a sector wide understanding of aromatawai, a teaching, learning and assessment approach underpinned by mātauranga Māori.

At the heart of this assessment Framework are these five guiding principles

  • Valid | Pono
  • Reliable | Haepapa
  • Informative | Mārama
  • Equitable | Tika
  • Authentic | Tūturu

The term aromatawai is derived from two words that convey its special nature, that is, its role in learning and teaching.

ARO is ‘to take notice of’ or ‘pay attention to’, and
MATAWAI is ‘to examine closely
