Listen (16 minutes) as  Kathryn Ryan  speaks to Mohamed Alansari, a senior researcher at NZCER about the research behind the Common Practice Model which will inform how literacy and numeracy is taught in primary and secondary schools.

Phase one release is about the themes and key principles, this will be followed later in the year by guidance around specific practices.

This was informed by a review of the recent literature (last 5 years) which focused on NZ based literature

The five good practices good practices with evidence base to predict good outcomes for learners are:

  1. Culturally sustaining practices – bring in students strengths
  2. Practices that are inclusive and equitable – participation by all
  3. Collaborative teaching practices – opportunities to work together. [whānau, teachers, students]
  4. Teaching that promotes agency – independence
  5. Teacher who are strategic and deliberate about the choices made based on where learners are at and where they need to go next
